Holy Island/Bamburgh

Today we visit the historic Holy Island of Lindisfarne, known simply as 'Holy Island' and Bamburgh.

Holy Island is classed as a both a tidal island and a village. Tidal Island refers to the fact that it is only accessible at certain times of the day, when the tide is out. Recording history from the 6th Century the picturesque island parish is a testament to human resilience through the construction of the monastery, which since its conception in 635AD still stands resolute, atop a cliff, to this day. To view it you must sweep across the sands and the causeway and is still to this day remains a place of pilgrimage. This is because the island is the final destination for the long distance walking route of one of Scotland's Great Trails, the St Cuthberts Way. One thing for for certain, Holy Island is likely to inspire you an leave a lasting impression.

Next we visit Bamburgh, most notable for two main reasons. The imposing Bamburgh Castle overlooking the beach and its association with Grace Darling, the Victorian heroine, who is buried there. Bamburgh is also host to an extensive award winning sandy beach. The Bamburgh sandy hills, an area of sand dunes which are a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Bamburgh is popular with holidaymakers and is within the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

A scenic tour to Holy island in the morning (Tides 1000-1600) and then a short drive to the stunning Bamburgh where the dunes and the castle dominate this small seaside village.
